I am Kusum and I come from village Hasanpur. I have been working as an Shikshan Mittra with Varitra Foundation for the last two years. I finished my schooling from a village government school, but unfortunately experienced how our society looks down upon children who go to government schools. This motivated me to work towards the cause of education especially for under-privileged children. I got an opportunity to work in Hasanpur Government Primary School. Post school, through our LEC, we would teach the children Math and English. However, my biggest challenge was learning to teach children through activities. It was new and experimental. Through our trainings at Varitra and with the help from school teachers, I overcame this gap and began activity-based teaching. To further create awareness on education among the community, I actively organized village rallies, street plays and other events with my LEC children. Even today our effort to improve the plight of rural schools continues and I am hopeful we can bring about a small change one day.
